Project Scope: Sympathetic Yorkstone Restoration Clean & Protection
The Overview
The Welcome Centre at St Albans Abbey is a high-traffic gateway to one of the UK’s most significant historical sites. Prestige was commissioned to restore and protect the natural Yorkstone flooring, ensuring the modern visitor facilities remain in harmony with the Abbey’s ancient architecture.
The Challenge
Natural Yorkstone is famously porous. In a high-footfall environment like a cathedral welcome centre, the stone quickly absorbs moisture and ground-in dirt, leading to a dull, shadowed appearance. The primary challenge was to deep-clean the stone and the grout lines without using aggressive acidic cleaners that could damage the structural integrity of the heritage stone or the surrounding historic fabric.
The Solution: pH-Neutral Mechanical Restoration
We implemented a sympathetic restoration process using pH-neutral chemistry and low-moisture mechanical agitation. By utilizing orbital technology, we were able to “lift” embedded contaminants from deep within the stone’s pores without over-wetting. Following the deep clean, we applied a breathable, sub-surface impregnating sealer. This protects the Yorkstone from liquid ingress and staining while allowing the natural stone to “breathe”—a critical requirement for historical buildings.
The Result
The Yorkstone was returned to its natural, honey-toned luster, providing a bright and clean welcome for visitors. The addition of the specialist breathable seal ensures the floor is significantly easier for the in-house team to maintain, protecting this prestigious asset for years to come.
